World's first underground hotel in China offers rooms submerged in an aquarium

Pack your bags for China: The world's first underground hotel is set to open Dec. 1.

Travelers are used to requesting the highest floor for the best views, but a new hotel in China offers the exact opposite.

InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, the world's first underground hotel, is set to open its doors on Dec. 1 after a decade of construction inside a formerly abandoned quarry nearly 20 miles from Shanghai.

The one-of-a-kind luxury resort offers 18 stories, plunging 300 feet into the quarry to showcase a waterfall built into the center of the structure. The majestic waterfall, in addition to panoramic views of the cliffs, can be seen from the rounded balconies on the first 16 floors.

The bottom two floors, however, substitute a balcony for an equally thrilling feature. The two lowest levels are completely submerged underwater in a 33-foot-deep aquarium, taking the phrase "sleeping with the fishes" to a whole new level.

Those seeking an additional thrill can look to bungee jump and rock climb at the luxury resort.

The hotel is also eco-friendly, creating its own power using geothermal and solar energy. The ground level roof is covered in greenery, blending into the surrounding landscape.

InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland has 337 rooms and suites.
