3 empty passenger buses catch fire at LA International Airport amid holiday travel season

Staff and wire reports

LOS ANGELES โ€“ At least three unoccupied passenger buses caught fire Saturday night at Los Angeles International Airport, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Shortly after 9 p.m., LAX Airport said on its Twitter account that โ€œโ€there is a significant fire emergency at the LAX-it lot. Emergency responders are on scene. More to come. No immediate reports of injuries.โ€

KTLA and the CBS station in Los Angeles tweeted photos of the fire spewing smoke.

About 10 p.m., the airport said that the fire had been put out, and there were no injuries. The lot reopened, and ride-share services resumed.

LAX had previously warned passengers to leave ample travel time amid spikes in holiday flyers.

Dec. 21, 22 and 23 are projected to be the most packed airport days of the holiday season, according to the American Automobile Association, as travelers head home over the weekend before Christmas.

Pro tip for those looking to book last-minute flights: For cheaper alternatives, AAA recommends taking flights on Christmas Eve, when tickets are cheaper, averaging $527. The day after Christmas nabs the highest average price of the week at $692.
