Tuesday's forecast: Frigid for East, snowy Great Lakes

Record-shattering cold will be the main story across much of the eastern half of the country on Tuesday. Snow will fly around the Great Lakes while warmth continues in the West.

Eastern U.S. In the Midwest, East and South, frigid temperatures and high winds will bring a mid-winter feel. Highs will only top out in the teens, 20s and 30s over a huge portion of the eastern half of the U.S. Even the Deep South will only be in the 30s and 40s. South Florida will be in the 70s.

Great Lakes: Huge amounts of lake-effect snow will bury areas to the east of the Great Lakes Tuesday. The heaviest snow is likely in New York State, which could see from 1-2 feet of snow.

West: The west will be clear and dry on Tuesday. Warm temperatures in the 70s and 80s are likely in most of California.
