In San Jose, options for internet service include both national and local providers. Cities with more than one regional provider are unusual, and San Jose also has three local internet companies available to residents and businesses.
However, more options do not necessarily equal cheaper internet. San Jose internet plans are more expensive on average than many similar-sized cities. Cheap internet is available from Xfinity, but other providers like AT&T, T-Mobile 5G and Sail Internet start at $55 or more.

Methodology
We rated the largest internet providers in the U.S. for 2024. Each provider was rated on a scale of 1 to 5 based on over a dozen factors, including speed, cost, availability, fees, customer satisfaction, connection type and more. We also used data from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to compare the average speed offered by internet companies in the U.S. to set a baseline for what is considered a good internet speed. Additionally, we analyzed data from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) to understand how each internet service provider (ISP) fares in customer service and perceived value.
How to choose an internet provider in San Jose
The best internet providers in San Jose include Xfinity, AT&T, T-Mobile 5G and more. Choosing the right one for you can be challenging unless you first narrow down what you need from an internet provider.
Consider these questions to help decide what your ideal internet plan may include:
- What is the best internet speed for you? For connecting up to 10 devices simultaneously, speeds between 100 Mbps to 1 GB are recommended. Speeds over 1 GB are recommended for more devices or heavier internet activity, such as competitive gaming or constant streaming.
- Do you need faster internet? If your current internet service has a lot of buffering or other issues, think about upgrading your internet speed.
- Do you want to rent equipment or buy a router and modem? Some providers, like Xfinity, charge a monthly rental fee for a gateway. Decide if you would rather pay a monthly fee or invest in your own equipment.
- If you live outside the city, do you need a rural internet provider? Rural internet options may have data limits, slower speeds or different necessary equipment, like satellites. Be sure to review the details of the rural internet plan you’re considering to ensure you understand all its parameters.
- Do you prefer postpaid or prepaid internet? Internet providers may require a credit check to sign up for service. However, if you’d like to avoid a credit check, search for a prepaid plan. Xfinity, AT&T and T-Mobile all offer prepaid plan options.
- Do you want professional installation, or do you feel comfortable setting up internet at your new home? Professional installation can sometimes cost extra, while self-installation is typically free.
