London and much of southeastern England went into lockdown as scientists in the U.K. released more information on a newly identified variant of the coronavirus that appears to be more contagious than the original.

Several of the new mutations affect the so-called "spiked protein" on the virus' surface that attaches to human cells.

Some mutations may increase how tightly the protein binds to the ACE2 receptor, its entry point into human cells, likely making it easier for the virus to get inside.

Colorado has confirmed the first U.S. case of the COVID-19 variant on Tuesday.

The patient is a man in his 20s who is recovering in isolation. He has no travel history and no close contacts. Public health officials were conducting an investigation.

Over 40 countries have banned travelers from the U.K. in response to the news about the new variant.

Some countries placed restrictions on travel allowing U.K. travelers to enter. The U.S. currently requires passengers arriving from the U.K. to test negative within 72 hours of departure.
