Usher is still at the top of his game, as BET has announced him as their 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.
The coveted honor celebrates “industry pioneers who have powerfully shifted culture and the entertainment industry.” Previous recipients include Whitney Houston, Prince, Queen Latifah, Anita Baker, Mary J. Blige, Samuel Jackson, Lionel Richie, and New Edition.
“The relationship between BET and Usher spans decades, from his multiple appearances on 106 & Park, to most recently winning the Entertainer of the Year trophy at the 55th NAACP Image Awards,” said Connie Orlando, BET EVP, Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy, in a statement. “From his chart-topping hits, electrifying performances, and unforgettable vocals to his signature moves and sound, Usher continues to stand on culture, setting new standards for the music industry and Black Excellence. We look forward to creating an amazing lineup to pay tribute to our global icon.”
Performers for his special tribute will be announced at a later date. However, fans are flooding the network’s comments with suggestions that include Chris Brown, Luke James, and Elijah Blake.
Not only was Ursher named the 2024 Entertainer of the Year at this year’s NAACP Image Awards, but he also received the President’s Award.
He dedicated that win to his wife, Jennifer, and mother, Jonnetta. “The tenacity that it took to look within a male-dominated industry and believe in your son unwaveringly, no matter how hard those board rooms may have been, she didn’t have the experience…but because of that, I have this moment,” he expressed.
In addition to the Lifetime Achievement Award, he may also take home four new wins at this year’s show.
The 2024 BET Awards airs live from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 30 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
