Still bitter about how Daenerys Targaryen’s plot line ended in Game of Thrones? HBO would like to make it up to you. On May 5, the TV giant revealed a first glimpse of House of the Dragon, one of approximately 72 spin-offs currently in development. Set 300 years before A Song of Fire and Ice, the drama will shadow the Targaryens during their quest to conquer Westeros. Miguel Sapochnik, who directed many of Game of Thrones’s most epic battle scenes, and Colony’s Ryan Condal are acting as showrunners for the programme, which is due to hit screens in 2022. George R R Martin is also creatively involved—presumably in an attempt to put off finishing his novel yet again.

In the trio of stills, The Crown’s Matt Smith appears as Prince Daemon Targaryen, the younger brother of King Viserys. Emma D’Arcy, meanwhile, can be seen in character as Viserys’s first-born daughter Rhaenyra; Steve Toussaint stares moodily at the camera as Lord Corlys Velaryon, also known as the Sea Snake (I cannot); and Olivia Cooke and Rhys Ifans refuse to make eye contact with each other as father and daughter Otto and Alicent Hightower, who live in the Red Keep and serve the Targaryens. Paddy Considine, Fabien Frankel, Eve Best and Sonoya Mizuno will also feature in the series.

Filming is currently underway in Cornwall, with paparazzi images taken of Smith and D’Arcy shooting on Holywell Beach. St Michael’s Mount, the county’s famous island monastery, is also reportedly a key production location, although it’s likely that the series will take the cast abroad as well. Of course, if the House of the Dragon sounds too Targaryen-heavy for you, you can always just wait for one of the six other prequels, or the Games of Thrones-inspired West End show that’s currently in development.
