Broadway sang and danced and serious-acted its way to $1.14 billion earned and 12.3 million tickets sold in 2012, notching its biggest year in both categories. Rising attendance is the noteworthy stat here, as ticket prices continue climbing each year. More neat numbers include tourists accounting for 63 percent of ticket sales, audiences being 67 percent female, and this, via EW: “Playgoers tended to be more frequent theatregoers than musical attendees. The typical playgoer saw six shows in the past year, compared with four for the musical enthusiast.”
