According to Variety, the National Association of Theater Owners reports that the U.S. box office has already topped $10 billion for the year, the earliest it ever has reached that benchmark. (The previous record was set in 2013, when the box office hit $10 billion on December 7.) The film that earned the most dough this year was Finding Dory, which pulled in $486.2 million. Captain America: Civil War, The Secret Life of Pets, The Jungle Book, and Deadpool round out the top-five highest-earning films of the year. While audiences have yet to have a chance to throw their money at Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (or Silence, Fences, Hidden Figures, La La Land or, you know, virtually any other Oscar hopeful), 2016 is unlikely to top 2015’s $11.12 billion box office; Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens opened December 18 and pulled in $652 million in two weeks. On the other hand, we’re all going to go see Why Him?, right? So you just never know.
