Will We Ever Get to See This Saoirse Ronan Oscar Contender?

When it premiered at Sundance, the Saoirse Ronan–starring film The Outrun seemed destined to be an awards contender, particularly for the perennially overlooked Ronan’s performance. Then it just … didn’t get distribution. Here’s the latest update on whether or not you can actually see this movie.

Oh look, a trailer

May 30, 2024: When the upcoming Saoirse Ronan star vehicle The Outrun premiered at Sundance in early 2024, it was greeted with words such as “transcendent” and predictions that it may finally earn Ronan the Oscar she’s lost four times now. Four months later, the movie put out its first trailer on May 30, but a wide audience is no closer to seeing it. The Outrun, despite its positive buzz and huge star, strangely still does not have a U.S. distributor and thus no U.S. release date. The film, based on Amy Liptrot’s 2016 memoir of the same name, stars Ronan as an alcoholic Scottish woman struggling to recover, which is exactly the kind of star and plot combination that you’d think awards-hungry studios would be fighting over. Yet the movie, which was directed by Nora Fingscheidt, has only U.K. and German release dates — September 27 and November 7, respectively. The trailer does include a pull quote that The Outrun “has to be seen on the big screen.” Well, we’re trying!

Okay, we’re on

July 12, 2024: Seven months into 2024, a major Oscar contender is finally, actually in the race. Sony Pictures Classic and Stage 6 Films bought The Outrun on July 12, slating it for an October 4 release in North America, right at the beginning of true awards season. Saoirse-heads (or is it actually Saoirse-nators?), please breathe a sigh of relief. She’s in the race. She’s outrunning it, actually.
