I am not often in the city for breakfast, but here is where I've been.

I am very rarely in New Orleans when I am in the mood for a leisurely breakfast. because of that, I had never tried Surrey's despite every barista at my favorite shop down the street recommending it. So when a friend recommended we try it one late morning, I jumped at the chance. I had heard horror stories about how crowded it can get, but on a weekday around 10 there was no wait. Service was good, but the food was the star. I ordered the migas which was eggs, cheese, and chorizo. The spice of the chorizo went perfectly with the scrambled eggs. This dish might be my new favorite New Orleans breakfast. The restaurant is very small and does get very crowded. Even though it is small, the tables are spaced far enough apart that you can have a private conversation. This is a huge plus compared to other small restaurants. I really enjoyed my meal at Surrey's. If you are looking for breakfast in the LGD, you should definitely give Surrey's a try. -
John L.’nin 4-yıldızlı yorumu: Surrey's is quickly becoming on of my favorite places in the city. I normally frequent their location in the LGD, but went to this location one morning at the suggestion of a fellow yelper. Located in what seems to be an old house, Surrey's has a lot of charm. That charm comes at a price as seating is very limited. On the morning we visited there was a wait for inside, but there was availability on the side porch. Of course as soon as we sat down a torrential downpour began so we relocated inside and waited for a table. One of the benefits of waiting at the bar for a table is that we were seated directly next to the kitchen. That allowed me to view all of the delicious items they were preparing, and it convinced me to try something different. Once our table was ready, I knew exactly what to order. Shrimp and grits is a very popular dish that took me a long time to jump on the bandwagon. I didn't understand those two foods going together until I had BBQ shrimp and grits and was totally hooked. Surrey's version is a BBQ shrimp and grits, and was absolutely amazing. The grits were creamy and perfect with perfectly cooked shrimp in that oh so heavenly sauce. It was so good that had I been by myself, I would've licked the bowl clean. In addition to all that goodness, there were several pieces of bacon as a garnish. I cannot say enough good things about this dish. Surrey's is an excellent place for breakfast or lunch. If you've never been, come to this location. That way I can get a table at the LGD without a wait. -
John L.’nin 4-yıldızlı yorumu: Please - U is an old school diner. I love old school diners. I have driven down St. Charles Avenue an untold number of times in my life. On several occasions I noticed this place, but immediately discounted it because of the funny name and outward appearance. As the years passed and I finally learned about not judging a book by its cover, I reconsidered my initial impression. I lucked out and found a parking spot directly in front, but I would not count on that being available. If you come, use caution parking in the Walgreen's lot on the corner as they advertise towing non-customers. I was in a breakfast mood so I ordered the western omelet and hash browns. Their version of the western omelet was pretty good. The eggs formed a thin shell and were filled with a good amount of ham, cheese and vegetables. They definitely did not skimp on fillings. Oftentimes when the eggs form a thin shell you can end up with the perfect ratio of egg to stuffing and that maximizes tastiness. There is a mathematical formula if you're some sort of math nerd, but I just know it when I see it. Their version had the thin shell of eggs, but the ratio was slightly off. It was a very good omelet, but my quest for the perfect ratio will continue. I really enjoyed my trip to Please-U. If you have a hankering for a traditional diner and want a good omelet, I encourage you to check them out. -
John L.’nin 4-yıldızlı yorumu: I was surprised to learn that Blue Plate had permanently closed. At least that is what the most recent photo uploaded to Yelp seems to indicate. It almost seems silly to review a closed business, but I went here for breakfast a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. From what I read online it looks like I may have had one of their last breakfasts. Here is how it went: I have always been a fan of breakfast in restaurants as opposed to cooking it myself. It wasn't until recently that I have been able to explore Nola's breakfast eateries and I am always on the lookout for the next great place. One lovely morning I searched for, and found Blue Plate. The reviews looked good so off I went. The restaurant itself was very attractive with a down home feel. There were various knick Knacks and decorations on the walls that made me feel like I was eating in a friend's kitchen as opposed to a restaurant. The server was very attentive, and very friendly. She even forgave me for having to take a work related call at the table. I can't stand when people do that so I was pretty embarrassed, but she handled it like a champ. I decided on an omelet for breakfast and picked their twice baked which had potatoes, bacon, cheese and was topped with sour cream. I was pretty impressed by that omelet and its stuff to egg ratio. It's a shame I won't get to try any more of their other offerings. I really wish I could say more about the place, but the fact that they are now permanently closed sure is a downer. I guess I will have to keep searching for that perfect breakfast place or hope a new restaurant opens in this location. -
John L.’nin 3-yıldızlı yorumu: What just happened? After reading all of the stellar reviews for Coulis, I knew I had to give it a try. While not my normal breakfast spot, I can see Coulis entering the rotation. This despite wondering what happened after finishing my meal. Coulis is located right near Touro so parking can be difficult. I circled the block several times before finding a spot close by. I would have had a better spot, but for some unknown reason, a woman was blocking two spots directly in front of the restaurant. Being that I am a gentleman, I resisted the urge to ram her car into the street, but I digress. Upon entering I realized the restaurant was empty. Despite that, we were directed to a corner table back near the kitchen area. I liked that I had a full view of the restaurant, but the table felt cramped. I couldn't quite figure out who the waitress was supposed to be as at least two separate people waited on my table. It wasn't the team effort like you'd find at Commanders. It was more of the I can't remember if anyone talked to you yet effort. The food ranged from mediocre to downright awesome. The huevos rancheros done Shana style were mediocre. There was way too much on that plate and the competing flavors did not go well together. What was awesome was the "hash browns". I used quotes because to me, the dish seemed more like some sort of sautéed potatoes than hash browns. If you've never had this dish, do yourself a favor and order it. Knowing what I know now, I will probably just make a meal out of the hash browns on my next visit. If you go to Coulis, prepare for odd service and amazing hash browns. -
John L.’nin 3-yıldızlı yorumu: There is something special about breakfast. It's the one meal that I cannot make nearly as good as most dedicated breakfast places can. I don't know if their eggs are fresher than the ones I get, or if I am just not as good of a cook as I think I am. Either way, I love going eat breakfast at a restaurant because they just do it better. One morning I was was craving shrimp and grits. I happened to be in the neighborhood for work and searched yelp and that's how I found Ruby Slipper. It seemed most of my friends loved the place so off I went. The first thing I noticed was how popular a restaurant it was. Street parking was scarce and there was a short wait for a table. This was on a weekday too so I could imagine weekends are even more crowded. The server seemed rushed and service was somewhat impersonal. The dining area was also a bit cramped. If you intend on having a private conversation, good luck. Since I was craving it, I ordered shrimp and grits. I was very disappointed with their version. The shrimp were properly cooked, but lacked the bold flavor I was expecting. The grits actually seemed to have more flavor than the shrimp. Would I return to Ruby Slipper? Probably so, but I will order something else next time -
John L.’nin 4-yıldızlı yorumu: Waking Bakin is a small, but great breakfast place in Mid-City. I am really a lucky guy. I have some pretty awesome Yelp friends who have steered me to some great places lately. In particular Danon, Charles and Michelle were all so complimentary of thins place that I knew I had to try it. There was some weird construction going on in the area so I worried that parking would be an issue. Luckily for me, I scored a spot right out front. It was apparently such a good spot that some of the diners out front even commented how awesome I was. Ok, I may have made that last part up, but it was an awesome spot. Inside was warm and inviting. The restaurant is small, actually tiny, but very comfortably laid out. Despite the small size, the tables were spaced far enough apart that I didn't feel like neighboring tables were practicing their eavesdropping skills. Food was simple, but very good. I opted for a make your own omelet with hash browns. The hash browns were perfectly cooked and not overly greasy. The omelet was thin with a perfect egg to stuff ratio. That ratio is vital to a good omelet and they got it right. My coffee was served in a mug that I think was originally a soup bowl with a handle. It held at least two cups. Considering my caffeine addiction, it was much appreciated. Prices were very reasonable for the product received. The staff were all helpful, friendly and welcoming. I really liked Wakin Bakin and think you will too. -
John L.’nin 4-yıldızlı yorumu: While Panera may have "bread" in their name, I have never tried any of the baked goods. What keeps me coming back to Panera for breakfast is their iced coffee and their power menu. The moment you walk in to Panera your olfactory system will be overwhelmed with the smells of baking bread. If you are a human, this sensation will be quite pleasurable. If you're not a human, I can't help you. Despite that overwhelming desire to purchase an entire loaf of something, my trips to Panera are pretty routine at this point. I order a giant iced coffee and a steak and egg power bowl. The iced coffee is very good with just the right amount of bitterness and coffee flavor one would expect in a cold drip coffee, It is also serve yourself, so the ratio of ice to coffee is always perfect. The large size is in the 32 oz. range so if you're in need of a massive dose of caffeine, this is the size you need. The bowl consists of two eggs, steak, tomatoes, fresh avocado and a few other things I can't remember. That bowl is not only tasty, it is also pretty darn healthy, particularly if you have some aversion to carbs. This a'int your typical fast food breakfast. The staff at Panera is very friendly and helpful. The ladies who make the breakfast are particularly friendly and will even remember you if you are even an occasional visitor. If you want something different for breakfast, I encourage you to give this Panera a try. -
John L.’nin 1-yıldızlı yorumu: Normally a restaurant with 586 reviews and a four star average is a guaranteed home run. I guess I have found the exception to the rule. My experience at Elizabeth's left me surprised, disgusted and slightly poorer than I was before I walked in. Elizabeth's is incredibly popular. Tourists and locals sing its praises and it is often packed with a lengthy wait. I guess you could say I lucked out on the day I visited and was seated immediately, but looking back, I wish the line of tourists would have been out the door so I would have skipped it. The downstairs area was packed so we were seated upstairs and it was nearly empty. Normally that would mean prompt service, but it was quite the opposite. Our server also seemed to have some sort of entitled attitude like he was better than us, and maybe he was (I was born in Houma after all), but he could have at least acted as if he appreciated our visit. I guess when you're a true New Orleanian you look down upon those of us who aren't. The food was shockingly bad. I ordered a shrimp an andouille omelet expecting smoky, spicy flavors with perfect gulf shrimp. What I received was a bland omelet with bland sausage topped by bland hollandaise. It was the worst omelet I have ever had and an embarrassment to southern cuisine. As a side we decided to find out what the hype was all about and ordered an extremely expensive side of praline bacon. Praline fucking bacon. Praline. Motherfucking. Bacon. Am I doing it right? That seems to be the reaction when most people taste this dish. My reaction was more along the lines of calling the NOPD to report a robbery. $6 or 7 dollars for four strips of bacon with caramelized sugar? Hell no. Don't believe the hype. FYI - the NOPD never showed up. After paying the bill I just felt like I had been bamboozled. I honestly cannot believe that people line up out of the door daily to be bamboozled. If I am wanting breakfast in the city I can think of at least three places with far superior food, parking and service with a much cheaper price tag. All I have to say to Elizabeth's is: BYE FELICIA!
