John L.s 5-stjerners anmeldelse: There is no better coffee shop in New Orleans. Everyone knows that when you frequent a place you get to know the employees and customers, and they know you. It makes each trip a little more special and enjoyable. Mojo is definitely that place for me. When I leave town and have to get coffee somewhere else, I feel lost. Mojo has great employees, great customers and most importantly, great coffee. This is a great place to study, work or just hang out and people watch. It isn't for everyone, but Mojo is definitely one of my all time favorite places. -
John L.s 5-stjerners anmeldelse: Miette is a really cool shop located on Magazine Street in the same block as Juan's and Aiden Gill. Miette has cool and trendy clothing and accessories. If your cool and trendy, or are just trying to be cool and trendy, this is the place for you. Some of the items I looked at had labels written in Korean. Apparently many of the items come from Korea and are for smaller statured women. I am a giant, and a dude, so none of the clothes are really geared towards me, but they did look cool. There were also some kid's onesies including my favorite one said Poo Dat. There is lots of jewelry and other cool items from local artists. Several light fixtures made from old Mardi Gras beads are also for sale. The owner was really cool and helpful and answered all of my questions. If you're in the market for some really cool clothing and your a small girl Miette is for you. If your not a girl there is still plenty of cool jewelry and other household items. -
John L.s 4-stjerners anmeldelse: Delta Angel is great. For several weeks I have seen the signs advertising Delta Angel. Having been inside of St. Vincent's before, I was a little worried. Thankfully I overcame my fear, and now I can't wait to go back. The dining area had a cool, funky vibe. I really liked the light fixtures that were made from roof ventilation fans. Service was friendly, and professional. The menu had several items that looked great, but I decided to go with the Black and Bleu steak sandwich with a side of vegetarian pasta salad. The pasta salad was very good, but the sandwich was incredible. It was so good that it may have been the best non po-boy sandwich I have had this year. I can't accurate describe the flavors other than to say everything on that sandwich combined together to form greatness. It was that good. If you are looking for a great breakfast or lunch place, give Delta Angel a try. If you need someone to go with you, let me know. This is a place I need to be going far more frequently. -
John L.s 4-stjerners anmeldelse: Juan's offers great food at very reasonable prices. I have been to Juan's several times, but my last trip was by far the best. A buddy and I were looking for a lunch place and decided to go to Juan's at the last minute. Even though it was prime lunch time (12:00), the restaurant was busy, but not packed. We were promptly seated and our server immediately arrived to take our drink orders. This level of service continued throughout our meal. Our server was attentive, but not overbearing. On this trip I ordered the western burrito with steak. Imagine fajitas wrapped into a large burrito and you get the picture of what this entailed. It was wonderful. the steak, onions, peppers and cheese all combined to make a juicy and filling burrito. Fellow Yelper Shannon S.'s suggested I ask for the habanero hot sauce when ordering. i did, and I am glad. The sauce was hot, but flavorful. It really made the burrito even better. In fact, this may have been the best burrito I have had in the city so far. I really enjoy Juan's. If you're in the Garden District and looking for reasonable, good food, give Juan's a try. -
John L.s 4-stjerners anmeldelse: Lilly's had great food, and very friendly owners. One night when I was working late, I decided to pick up some takeout. As soon as I walked in the door I was immediately greeted and made to feel truly appreciated. The owners were incredibly friendly and chatted with me the entire time while I waited for my order. It was a very nice touch. For food, I ordered the grilled pork bun (vermicelli noodles). It was great. The pork was perfectly cooked and had a slightly smokey flavor that went very well with the vegetables and noodles. While still a novice when it comes to Vietnamese food, this version was one of the better ones I have tried. I look forward to many more trips, especially when I have time to sit and enjoy my meal inside the restaurant. -
John L.s 3-stjerners anmeldelse: I do not know much about Vietnamese food. I do know that since trying it for the first time three weeks ago, I am hooked. Pho Noi Viet is the fourth restaurant I have tried in that brief time. The food was very good, but the service seemed unreasonably slow. Located on Magazine street in the block where it becomes two way traffic, there is only street parking available. This was not a problem as I was able to park within half a block of the restaurant. Inside the restaurant was very attractive. My favorite feature was the two gas meters near the front door. You don't normally see gas meters so it had kind of an industrial feel to it. The door handle was also very cool as I exited. Service was very friendly, but very slow. Our server was attentive, but the food took well over over 30 minutes from ordering to arrive. Normally I wouldn't mind a lengthy meal since it gives me time to talk, but for lunch, that was excessive. Because the entire meal took nearly 1.5 hours, I had to work late to make up the time lost at lunch. The food was very good. I ordered the grilled pork bun (vermicelli noodles) with egg roll. This was my first experience with bun, but it was great. The egg roll in particular was very good. In fact, it was so good that it may have been the best egg roll that I have ever had. Unlike other egg rolls, it was loaded with "stuff" and pre-cut in the kitchen into several bite sized pieces. This saved me from trying to cut it (I had no knife), which normally leaves the "stuff" squirting out anyway. Because the food was so great, I will be back. I just hope the next trip doesn't take as long. -
John L.s 3-stjerners anmeldelse: I have driven by this bar an untold number of times during the day, and always wanted to check it out. It is located on the one-way section of Magazine, which gets less foot traffic than the more busy two way traffic section. Because of this it had a distinct neighborhood bar feel. Even though I was treated well, I got a weird vibe like I was an outsider (which I was). One feature that I really liked was the couch area. It was located towards the back, which made it a more quiet conversation space. There was a decent beer selection, and service was friendly and prompt. The bartender was even nice when I drank only water. In summary, the couch area is great, I liked it, but felt like I was imposing on the neighborhood crowd. I would probably come back, but next time I will head straight for the couch. -

John L.s 4-stjerners anmeldelse: The Irish House is a unique and enjoyable addition to the Lower Garden District. I am very surprised that it has taken me this long to try this place. When a friend called last night and suggested we try it during lunch, I jumped at the chance. The building is beautiful. Besides having a private, gated lot, the restaurant has a fancy pub type feel. On the side are several tables with umbrellas that would be great for an alfresco dinner or just drinks with friends. Since we were here for lunch I couldn't sample the beers, but I was pleased to see a large bar area with proper chairs. We started with an order of the bacon and cheese croquettes. They came served on top of an onion marmalade which was far too tart for my tastes. The croquettes were good, but next time I will try something different. For my entree I ordered the murphinator poboy which was their take on the traditional New Orleans roast beef. While very different from what I am used to, it was very good. The side of gravy that came with it was rich and had a great beefy flavor. Once I poured it on the sandwich, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Service was friendly and efficient. The server offered to explain any questions we had about Irish food and offered several suggestions. I really liked this restaurant. I have a feeling I will like it even more once I come and spend some time at the bar. Note: If you like Irish music like I do, you will be very happy with the background music. -

I am very rarely in New Orleans when I am in the mood for a leisurely breakfast. because of that, I had never tried Surrey's despite every barista at my favorite shop down the street recommending it. So when a friend recommended we try it one late morning, I jumped at the chance. I had heard horror stories about how crowded it can get, but on a weekday around 10 there was no wait. Service was good, but the food was the star. I ordered the migas which was eggs, cheese, and chorizo. The spice of the chorizo went perfectly with the scrambled eggs. This dish might be my new favorite New Orleans breakfast. The restaurant is very small and does get very crowded. Even though it is small, the tables are spaced far enough apart that you can have a private conversation. This is a huge plus compared to other small restaurants. I really enjoyed my meal at Surrey's. If you are looking for breakfast in the LGD, you should definitely give Surrey's a try. -
John L.s 4-stjerners anmeldelse: Evangeline is a pretty cool bar with live music. It wasn't that long ago that I realized that I had been to nearly every bar in Uptown New Orleans. While trying to figure out a new place to go, I stumbled upon this place. I never thought about any bars other than Avenue Pub when I was in this area, so when I discovered Evangeline, I knew I had to check it out. the bar is long and narrow with the bar on one side, video poker on the other and a stage at the end of the building. The night I visited a patron told me about a $2 beer special so that is the direction I went. There is something very cool about listening to a band and drinking $2 Abita. Unfortunately that rarely happens, so when it does, I really appreciate it. Even without the cheap beer, I think Evangeline is a bar where I could see myself becoming a regular. -
John L.s 4-stjerners anmeldelse: Charcoal's offers unique meat choices and serves up a very tasty burger. I normally wait to visit a new establishment for a few weeks to give them time to work out the kinks. I don't think it is fair to the business to review a place in its first few days without cutting them some slack for sow service, or menu shortages. I lucked out on my visit a week or so after they first opened and had a great experience. I drive past the intersection of Jackson and Magazine quite frequently and have been curious about what the new building was going to be for several months. I drove by on opening day, but didn't go in because I hadn't heard anything about it. After my first visit, I know I will be back. I was surprised at the different meat choices. There were several exotic game burgers along with their house bend ground beef. I was feeling adventurous so I decided on the antelope with cheddar. The burger was cooked perfectly. It was juicy and did not taste as odd as I would have expected antelope to taste. I guess I had no clue what to expect, but it was very good. The burger came with a side of homemade chips which were similar in style to plain Zapp's. I think I will upgrade to tots or fries on my next visit. I was surprised at how friendly and efficient the staff were. I came in early to beat the lunch rush which I would recommend to others. At 11:00 a.m., there was no line and several open seats. While I did really enjoy the food, I have a couple of slight issues. The first is that it was more expensive than I would have expected. With cheese and sauteed onions my burger, chips and drink ended up around $15. While not super expensive, some friends went another day and had a bill of close to $80 including alcohol. The other slight issue is the seating situation. Most of the seats were either bar style seating or at picnic tables. I am a friendly guy, but I prefer sitting at an actual table separate from those I don't know. Since I came early I was able to snag that table, but if I had waited I don't think I would have been able to. In summary, I really enjoyed the food and service at Charcoal's. I suspect they will become one of my regular lunch spots. -
John L.s 3-stjerners anmeldelse: It sure seems that I have been visiting this Office Depot quite frequently in the past few months. As the guy in possession of the work credit card, I have to be present anytime we need supplies. I also get to pick where we go for supplies and this has become my go-to spot. One thing Office Depot does seem to have am abundance of is employees willing to help find what you need. They can get a little too helpful if you are just browsing, but I guess that's why they are there. This store seems to stay fairly busy and check out can sometimes take a little too long. Because it shares a lot with the St. Charles Tavern and Miyako parking and exiting your spot can get a little hairy around lunch time. I suggest coming during non-lunch hours. If you're in the LGD and need office supplies, come check out this Office Depot. -
John L.s 4-stjerners anmeldelse: I am a big fan of businesses that believe in truth in advertising. Trying to figure out what a business sells is occasionally difficult based on name alone, but that isn't a problem here. The location (District) and products (donuts, sliders and brew) are all part of the name. I sure wish other businesses would follow that trend. I normally like to give new businesses a chance to work out the kinks before I spend my hard earned money. I made an exception for DDSB because many of the reviews, including sources I trust, have been very positive. So positive that I decided to drive into the city last Sunday just to give them a try. People seemed to be milling about when I first walked in so I joined them. I apparently picked the correct place to stand since once the group moved, I was able to place my order. In the name of research, I ordered one of each type of meat slider that was available. At $3.50 per slider, they weren't cheap, but they were very good. Cheeseburger Slider - This was actually my least favorite of the three I tried, but it was still good. It was dressed with a tomato, pickle, cheese and mayo. This mini burger was a significant step up from a Krystal or Castle Burger, but the other versions were more impressive. Chicken Slider - The perfectly fried piece of chicken was very tasty. The addition of the coleslaw, jalapeno and unknown sauce really improved this slider dramatically. Without those additions, it would've been a reasonably good chicken sandwich, but with them, it was something much better. Special Slider (Pork Belly) - If you are a fan of pork, you will love this slider. I have not fully embraced the pork fad that is sweeping the nation, but this slider may have changed my mind. The pork belly was tender and succulent which I assume is directly related to its high fat content. Once I took a bite I didn't care if it was pure fat, as it was pure goodness. The addition of the sprout looking stuff and the red onion really set this slider apart from the other two. I hope this becomes one of their regular menu items. I regret that I did not try any of their coffee or kolaches. As far as I know, this is the first business to sell kolaches in the city. For those of you who have not tried a kolache, you must do that as soon as possible. You will thank me later. My one complaint is the size of the water I ordered to go with my sliders. I realize they didn't charge for the tiny cup they gave me, but it was at best three small sips before the cup was empty. That averaged out to one sip per slider which was definitely not enough to keep me hydrated. I really enjoyed my trip here and suspect I will soon become a regular. -
John L.s 4-stjerners anmeldelse: Please - U is an old school diner. I love old school diners. I have driven down St. Charles Avenue an untold number of times in my life. On several occasions I noticed this place, but immediately discounted it because of the funny name and outward appearance. As the years passed and I finally learned about not judging a book by its cover, I reconsidered my initial impression. I lucked out and found a parking spot directly in front, but I would not count on that being available. If you come, use caution parking in the Walgreen's lot on the corner as they advertise towing non-customers. I was in a breakfast mood so I ordered the western omelet and hash browns. Their version of the western omelet was pretty good. The eggs formed a thin shell and were filled with a good amount of ham, cheese and vegetables. They definitely did not skimp on fillings. Oftentimes when the eggs form a thin shell you can end up with the perfect ratio of egg to stuffing and that maximizes tastiness. There is a mathematical formula if you're some sort of math nerd, but I just know it when I see it. Their version had the thin shell of eggs, but the ratio was slightly off. It was a very good omelet, but my quest for the perfect ratio will continue. I really enjoyed my trip to Please-U. If you have a hankering for a traditional diner and want a good omelet, I encourage you to check them out. -
John L.s 4-stjerners anmeldelse: Corner Muse is a cool, friendly place where you can get a great cup of coffee. I am a coffee fanatic. I drink at least one giant iced coffee per day, and occasionally have several. If that fine balance of caffeine to blood ratio is not maintained, my productivity screeches to a halt. Some people may call this an addiction, but I don't really like those judgmental people anyway. I happened upon Corner Muse because my normal coffee spot was packed with Mardi Gras tourists. Nothing against those people, but I needed coffee and my body would not allow that long of a wait. I had tried visiting once before, but came too early and they were closed. Now that I've been, I am confident that I will be back. This place is great. The building itself is very inviting. While small inside, it was very comfortable and relaxed and would be a good place to work or read. The barista was quite friendly and treated me as if I were a regular despite this being my first visit. Service like that is rarely found at the giant chains and is further proof of why I should only visit local coffee shops. As I was ordering my coffee I noticed they also serve snoballs. I am not a fan, but I think coffee and snoballs are a perfect pairing and I'm surprised more shops don't try that. The iced coffee was smooth with just a hint of bitterness. I was in a rush after I left so I drank the whole cup rather quickly. I don't know if theirs has more caffeine than other shops, but it sure did perk me up. I need to remember that on those days that I don't get enough sleep. If you are in the LGD and need a good cup of coffee, look no further than Corner Muse. -
John L.s 5-stjerners anmeldelse: Nola Smokehouse is exactly what I was looking for. For years New Orleans had a lackluster selection of BBQ restaurants. It seems Nola is slowly starting to become more of a BBQ town and for that, I am grateful. I happened upon Nola Smokehouse as a direct result of Yelp. Apparently they haven't been open too long and their page has been plastered on Yelp's front page for a few weeks. When I had a craving for BBQ last week, I remembered the name and headed to Jackson Avenue. The building is rather unassuming from the outside. The only clue of what was in store for me was the amazing aroma and smoke wafting over the wooden fence out back. As I walked in, I knew I was in for a treat. The restaurant is somewhat Spartan on the inside, but that is exactly how I like it. This is not some fancy pretentious place. It is a casual, perfectly appointed restaurant with damn fine BBQ. Since I was in a serious mood for BBQ, I opted for the three meat plate. My meats were sliced brisket, pulled pork and pork belly (a first for me as a BBQ dish). While they were preparing my plate, the chef was more than happy to talk BBQ with me and offer his tips. He also informed me that he will start doing BBQ classes on the weekends where participants get to eat the food they learn to cook. Sounds like a pretty good way to spend two hours on a Saturday. Back to the food. While he was slicing the brisket for my plate, I was drooling like a passed out frat boy. That brisket looked and smelled absolutely amazing. The five minute ride back to my office seemed like it took an hour as the smell coming from my food made me want to violate the speed limit by 50 mph. I couldn't get back to my office fast enough. Brisket That brisket was amongst the best I have ever had in my entire life. I thought I made a good brisket on my Big Green Egg, but after one bite I realized I know nothing. The smoke flavor was perfect. The bark was perfect. The brisket was the perfect tenderness. Am I gushing? Yes. It was that good. So good that I tried to get more today only to realize they're closed on Monday. Oh well, there is always tomorrow. Pulled Pork The pork, like the brisket had an incredible smoky taste. Most times I've had pulled pork locally it lacks that smoke flavor and has little taste without sauce. Nola's version is perfectly seasoned and smoky. I bet it would make a great batch of nachos or sandwich as well as being great by itself. Pork Belly OK, here is what I've learned. Despite several attempts, I am not a fan of pork belly. This wasn't the fault of Nola Smokehouse. It's just one of those things I can't take in large doses. The pork belly slider at District is great, but that portion is enough for me. If you are a fan of pork belly, I would imagine you would love this version. It was melt in your mouth tender and had a great taste. I absolutely loved the brisket and pork here. I have a feeling I will become a regular quite soon. Note: The three meat plate is a massive quantity of BBQ. If you are really hungry, or want to share, I recommend you get that size. -
John L.s 3-stjerners anmeldelse: In a world where most people think BBQ means grilling a hamburger, Black Label is a welcome addition to the ever growing Nola BBQ scene. For years the city was a virtual wasteland when it came to legitimate BBQ and now we have a bunch of places to choose from. Black Label bills itself as Texas style BBQ and that is an accurate description. As far as technique, they fire up actual smokers as opposed to some electric smoking rigs used by other area restaurants. Their food is good to very good, but I think other aspects fall a little short. Food Brisket - Very Good. The brisket plate was mostly lean, but it had a great thick smokey taste. If you are unaccustomed to real BBQ, you may find this flavor off putting, but for me, I loved it. Pork - Good. The pork was moist, but not as smokey as the brisket. Jalapenos - Holy Mackerel. The stuffed jalapenos were creamy bites of smokey goodness. I could make a meal solely on these incredible poppers. Whatever you do, make sure you get some of these. Location Black Label is a pop up based in Barrel Proof. Maybe I am getting old or something, but it was pretty dark inside and I was confused about where to order. Once I noticed the host stand at the back left of the bar I figured it out. Because it isn't a dedicated restaurant, the vibe of the place was a little odd. People were friendly, but it felt like the combination of fancy whisky bar and BBQ joint was a bit forced. Prices I realize that the price of beef has skyrocketed, but I felt like the prices are a little steep. I am no expert in food cost, but brisket at Black Label is around $9-10 more per pound than other local stand alone bbq joints. Their brisket is very good, but I don't think it is above and beyond the other places with lower prices. Summary Black Label puts out a good product, but the location and prices detract from the otherwise good product. If I find myself inside of Barrel Proof for some reason I feel sure I will be ordering more BBQ from Black Label. I just don't know if I will go out of my way to visit.
