‘An Officer And A Gentleman’
Watching Taylor Hackford’s 1982 film An Officer And A Gentleman in 2016 makes one phrase come to mind: They sure don’t make them like they used to. This film just plain succeeds on every conceivable level. It’s a film about the military, it’s a film about masculinity, it’s a film about shitty fathers, it’s a film about escaping your podunk home town, and it’s a film about friendship. Most of all, though, it’s a film about romance; specifically, the carnal electricity that pulsates between leads Richard Gere and Debra Winger. Love lift us up where we belong, indeed!
