‘Assassination Nation’
Before he created the HBO hit Euphoria, director Sam Levinson used his shimmery aesthetic and topsy-turvy camerawork on the film Assassination Nation. Similar to his series, the film follows an ensemble of edgy teenagers. This time, though, there’s a bit of a Black Mirror aspect: when an anonymous hacker begins sharing texts, photos, and other files off of the high schoolers’ phones, the town is torn apart. Teens begin hunting each other for misdeeds, and suspecting each other as the hacker. The town is aptly named Salem, a strong reference to the Salem witch trials. Levinson’s vibrant filmmaking style makes Assassination Nation a brilliant, glossy thrill.
