‘Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me’
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me was the first theatrical viral hit. I mean, maybe that’s not exactly true, but the first Austin Powers flick became a cult sensation after not quite connecting in theaters, ramping up through VHS rentals and word of mouth. But nobody could have predicted how big Spy Who Shagged Me would get, blowing the entire theatrical take of the first movie out of the water in its opening weekend. Luckily, it was just the right kind of dumb, with Mike Myers reprising his role as time-lost ’60s spy Austin Powers, and Lorne Michaels impersonation Dr. Evil. It’s dumb, it’s funny, and while all of the jokes don’t hold up to modern scrutiny, there are enough of them that it sort of doesn’t matter. Yeah, baby.
