‘Benedetta’
Known for satirical, provocative films like Basic Instinct and Showgirls, it perhaps comes as no surprise that Dutch director Paul Verhoeven made a nunsploitation film. Benedetta is a particularly clever spin on the genre, critiquing the Catholic Church’s visions of holiness and chastity through impish blasphemy. Based on a true story, the film follows a 17th century nun (played by a fearless Virginie Efira) who becomes convinced she’s Christ’s bride after experiencing erotic, religious visions — so obviously her lesbian affair and Virgin Mary dildo are a part of his divine plan. Benedetta might be playful on the surface, but its reclamation of female carnality as something sacred — and feared by the very institutions who seek to condemn — it is captivating. Thanks to Verhoeven, crucifixes have never looked so good.
