‘Black Bird’
Black Bird, Apple TV+’s six-episode limited series starring Taron Egerton, is further proof that the streaming service knows how to do drama. Based on a true story, the intense thriller follows Jimmy Keene (Egerton), a man serving 10 years in a minimum security prison. After Keene makes a deal with the FBI that could potentially commute his sentence, he goes undercover at a maximum-security prison and tries to befriend and coax a confession out of suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser). The chilling twist on typical true crime storytelling features top-notch acting from Egerton and Hauser, along with the late Ray Liotta’s final TV performance as Big Jim Keene, Jimmy’s father. Be warned, the subject matter is absolutely stomach-churning and difficult to watch at times, so I suggest spreading the episodes out rather than binge-watching. But that may be easier said than done once the engaging series sucks you in.
