‘Blackhat’
Michael Mann’s Blackhat TOTALLY tanked when it was released theatrically in the cinematic dead zone of January 2015. How bad did it bomb? Mann, one of the best American filmmakers of all-time, has not made another film since. While it cannot be argued that Blackhat lost Universal Studios a healthy chunk of change, it’s also inarguable that the film’s reputation has been unfairly maligned over the years. Thankfully, the worm is starting to turn, thanks to critical champions like New York‘s Bilge Ebiri. Now streaming on HBO Max and winning over new fans on Twitter, Mann’s hacker opus stars Chris Hemsworth and delivers on multiple levels: visual sumptuousness, grandiose action set-pieces, breathtaking locations, and plenty of super attractive actors. This is big budget, narratively complex adult fare, the kind of movie that Hollywood has largely thumbed its nose in the intervening years since Blackhat‘s initial release. Want that to change? Get on board the Blackhat bandwagon, there’s plenty of room for you.
