‘Boyz N The Hood’
With protests against police brutality taking place nationwide, it’s worth revisiting Boyz N The Hood, the 1991 film written and directed by the late John Singleton. The movie revolves around a trio of friends (Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, and Morris Chestnut) growing up in South Central Los Angeles, and the bond that is formed between them as they and their community struggle against poverty, gang violence, and a combative police force. Singleton’s film was a watershed moment, critically, commercially, and culturally, earning Singleton Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director, and also an esteemed spot in the National Film Registry.
