‘Copshop’
Scorsese and De Niro. Burton and Depp. Tarantino and Jackson. These are probably the names that first come to mind when you think of great pairings between directors and actors, but perhaps it’s time to start thinking about Carnahan and Grillo? Between The Grey, Boss Level, and now Copshop, these two proponents of humor-laced machismo are making their case to be included in the pantheon. Here, two sworn enemies — a slimy con man (Grillo) and a slimy contract killer (Gerard Butler) — both find themselves locked up overnight in separate cells of a small town jail. As you might expect from a Carnahan joint, fireworks — and dick-swinging contests — soon ensue.
This movie was torpedoed, commercially speaking, by the real life beef that broke out on set between Grillo/Carnahan and Butler, but the end product doesn’t suffer from it.
