‘Desperately Seeking Susan’
Watching Desperately Seeking Susan over 30 years after it was first released, you will inevitably wonder why Madonna never quite became a movie star. The camera clearly loves her, and she’s positively CRACKLING with star quality in this, her feature film debut. In retrospect, it was much easier for her to play “Madonna” than to inhabit any other character, which is why the tour documentary Truth or Dare is widely considered her second best on-screen performance (sorry, Evita fans). Don’t mourn too much for her failed silver screen ambitions, though, because this movie wonderfully captures Madge in those electric moments just before her star exploded, supernova style, onto the world stage.
