‘Dracula’ (2020)
Netflix’s new take on Dracula (via the BBC) is a mess, but an insanely watchable mess. Starting with the bones of Bram Stoker’s classic novel, creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss take a different approach from their bold Sherlock reboot to — initially — hew closer to the story. However, each 90 minute long episode (there are three in the first season) features multiple twists, anachronistic quips, and insane levels of gore. Claes Bang stars as the famous bloodsucker, and he devours every scene he’s in with panache, making even the goofiest stretches of the show eminently watchable. It all falls apart by the end of the last episode, but it wouldn’t be Dracula if it didn’t suck, just a little bit.
