‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’
As Twitter may have informed you, Drop Dead Gorgeous, the 1999 dark comedy starring Kirsten Dunst and Denise Richards as beauty pageant contestants, is now available to stream on Hulu. This is kind of a big deal, because though it’s become something a cult classic, for many years it wasn’t on digital at all, even for those willing to pay for it. (You can now buy it on YouTube or Google Play.) Shot in a mockumentary format and written by a former beauty pageant winner Lona Williams, it takes place in a fictional Minnesota town where everyone is obsessed with the upcoming Sarah Rose Cosmetics Mount Rose American Teen Princess Pageant. One small problem: People involved in the pageant keep dying. You’ll be delighted to see some of your favorite actors, like Allison Janney, Ellen Barkin, Brittany Murphy, and the feature film debut of a very young-looking Amy Adams. This biting satire may at times offend, but it’s just so weird and absurd, you can’t help but love it.
