‘Eighth Grade’

If you’re currently watching The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 and can’t put your finger on why you recognize the season’s newest character Skye, you’re not alone. It may have taken me five episodes to figure out, but Conrad and Jeremiah’s cousin is played by Elsie Fisher, who’s most recognizable as Kayla from Bo Burnham’s comedy-drama film Eighth Grade. The 2018 coming-of-age movie is one of my favorites, for its scarily accurate depiction of middle schoolers and incredibly moving portrayal of how overwhelming the world can be at just 13 years old. The film hones in on an anxiety-ridden Kayla as she strives to gain social status from her classmates in her last week of eighth grade. Full of moments that will make you laugh, cry, and cringe in the most relatable ways, Eighth Grade is a must-watch for middle schoolers and adults alike.
