‘Elephant’ (2020)
Elephant, the latest addition to DisneyNature’s portfolio of NatGeo-Lite family-friendly nature documentaries, tells the story of three elephants making the long trek across the Kalahari Desert in search of water and sustenance: Gaia (the elder matriarch of the elephant clan), Shani (an ascendant female), and Jomo (Shani’s son). The movie isn’t quite fantastical enough to win over stoners, but delivers a well-crafted narrative that will please kids and parents alike. (I confess that I cried at one point.) There’s even something in it for cynical culture vultures; the voiceover by HFRH Meghan Markle, who frequently either over-emotes or misreads the tone of a scene completely, deserves a Razzie nomination.
