‘Funny Pages’
If you’re the kind of person who feels nostalgic for games of Magic the Gathering in the back of comic book shops, then Funny Pages, a new A24 movie now available to buy on digital, is a must-watch. But this coming-of-age nostalgia is anything but rose-colored—rather, it’s mercilessly bleak. Writer/director Owen Klines refuses to forgive or prettify his protagonist, a teenage cartoonist with a little bit of talent and a whole lot of ego. Produced by the Safdie brothers, and featuring a breakout performance from Daniel Zolghadri, Funny Pages is darkly hilarious and uncomfortably frank. Plus, fans of Our Flag Means Death will be happy to see Black Pete (aka Matthew Maher) has the range.
