‘Holes’
As we’re all getting excited for Honey Boy, Shia LaBeouf’s upcoming film based on his childhood as an actor, why not rewatch him in one of his childhood roles that, I have it on good authority, LaBeouf actually likes? That film is 2005’s Holes, of course, one of the greatest children’s movies ever made. What I love about this movie—and what I love about the novel from Louis Sachar that it’s based on—is the storytelling. There are at least four different narratives spanning the course of several centuries, and yet they all weave together seamlessly. Holes is a gorgeously crafted puzzle that pieces itself together in the most emotionally satisfying way possible—much better, I’d argue, than most puzzle-box films aimed at adults. That’s not to mention the bangin’ soundtrack or presence of the always-great Sigourney Weaver, in one of her most iconic film entrances to date. Holes never fails to put a smile on my face. Even better: It’s now streaming on HBO!
