‘Lockwood & Co.’
Netflix has an unfortunate track record when it comes to the YA fantasy genre. For every monster hit like Stranger Things, there’s dozens of lackluster shows marred by atrocious writing and corny character cliches. Lockwood & Co. however is a triumph. Adapted by Joe Cornish (of Attack the Block fame), Lockwood & Co. is full of sharp British wit, briskly-paced storylines, and extremely lovable characters. The show is set in an alternate version of history where deadly ghosts invaded our reality some 50+ years ago. Only children and teens have the rare ability to see, hear, and battle these ghosts, turning them into the abused foot soldiers of a desperate society. After talented “listener” Lucy Carlyle (Ruby Stokes) is wrongfully blamed for an operation gone horrifically wrong in her Northern small town, she runs away to London. There, she finds employment in a rogue indie agency run by a pretentious prodigy named Anthony Lockwood (Cameron Chapman). Along with their third agent George Karim (Ali Hadji-Heshmati), the teenage ghost hunters of Lockwood & Co. court danger and solve grim mysteries. Lockwood & Co. might very well be the best YA show on Netflix — Stranger Things included*
