‘Mascots’
Little known secret: Christopher Guest made a brand new mockumentary in 2016, it’s streaming on Netflix as an original film, and it’s excellent. From the same guy who brought you Best In Show and This Is Spinal Tap, Mascots proves that Guest undeniably still got it. In what is essentially the same premise as Best In Show with sports’ team mascots, Guest brings back his longtime favorites—Jane Lynch, Parker Posey, Ed Begley Jr., Jennifer Coolidge, Don Lake, and the late, great Fred Willard—as well as a few new faces like Zach Woods, Sarah Baker, and Chris O’Dowd. The inside jokes for long-time fans are fun (including Guest reprising his role as Corky St. Clair from Waiting for Guffman), but like many of Guest’s movies, he saves the best for the very end. The final mascot competition is laugh-out-loud hysterical—a Eurovision parody four years before Will Ferrell did it. Just until you see the pencil sharpener act.
