‘Miracle on 34th Street’ (1994)
The Miracle on 34th Street remake has the reputation that one would expect a remake of a landmark holiday movie to have: it’s perpetually overshadowed, and not unjustly so. But it is unjust to keep this movie, one of those inviting and comfy John Hughes productions, out of the conversation just because it isn’t as good as one of the greatest Christmas movies ever. 1994’s Miracle on 34th Street has a lot going for it, like its luxe costuming and production design and top-notch performances from its cast, especially the precocious Mara Wilson and endearingly jolly Richard Attenborough. If the canon can hold multiple iterations of A Christmas Carol, then so can we enjoy both Natalie Wood and Mara Wilson.
