‘Moonstruck’
There’s never a bad time to revisit Moonstruck, the Norman Jewison-directed, Brooklyn Heights-set 1987 romantic comedy that has come to be considered a classic of the genre. There’s the near-absurdity of the delightful, coincidence-laden plot. There’s Cher and co-star Nicolas Cage all dressed up at the opera. And then there’s the snappy dialogue and (Italian-American) New York attitude. It all combined to earn Moonstruck three Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actress (Olympia Dukakis), Best Original Screenplay (John Patrick Shanley), and Best Actress (Cher, celebrating her 71st birthday today).
