‘My Girl’
My Girl is a notable entry in the coming-of-age film genre for many reasons, not the least of which is its heroine with her remarkable moniker — Vada Sultenfuss. This iconic drama follows the precocious 11-year-old Vada (Anna Chlumsky in her debut lead performance) during the summer of 1972. As her mortician father, Harry (Dan Aykroyd), begins to date his employee, the free-spirited Shelley (Jamie Lee Curtis), Vada runs around with her best friend, Thomas J (Macaulay Culkin) and dreams of becoming a writer. When tragedy strikes, Vada learns about grief while getting a glimpse of the complexities of adulthood. Honest, funny and heartfelt, My Girl is absolutely worthy of a rewatch.
