‘One Day’ (2024)

In the mood to get emotionally wrecked this Valentine’s Day? There’s a Netflix series for that! One Day, a 14-episode adaptation of the 2011 Anne Hathaway film (based on David Nicholls’ 2009 novel) is a decades-spanning story of love and friendship that will have you sweating, swooning, and sobbing. The British series follows unlikely best friends Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) and Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall), who meet on university graduation day and almost have a one-night stand. From there, we check in with the intertwined characters every July 15 from 1988 to 2007 and see how their relationships, careers, and personal lives have evolved. Crucially, we witness the ways in which time has pulled them apart, pushed them back together, and helped them realize their feelings for each other. With electric chemistry and devastating performances from its leads, Netflix’s One Day is a sexy, stirring series that hit me harder than the movie.
