‘Paper Girls’
Paper Girls, the live-action adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s hit comic book series now on Prime Video, takes a few episodes to get going. And even when it does, some janky effects and weird pacing hamper the overall show. But what works is the most important part: the four main girls (aka the paper girls of the title) make a solid ensemble and deliver some lovely dramatic moments. The plot is a little complicated, but the short version is due a series of accidental circumstances, the girls travel through time from the 1980s to the 2000s. Once there, they discover where their lives are going, all while being tailed by an as usual intense Adina Porter, playing a time hunter. In particular, Sofia Rosinsky as the caustic, doomed Mac and Fina Strazza as K.J. (who has a few things to figure out about what and who she likes) have a beautiful relationship, and deliver the best work of the series. Come for the Stranger Things-esque setup, stay for the girls.
