‘Pariah’
Director Dee Rees is currently featured on Netflix with her brand new, sprawling drama Mudbound. It’s a thrilling statement from a director who’s getting her big break to play on a large canvass. But Rees first made her name in the indie world with the intimate LGBTQ drama Pariah, back in 2011. It’s the story of a teen girl whose attraction to other girls is both thrilling and challenging. Featuring a phenomenal lead performance by Adepero Oduye (famously shouted out — and interestingly pronounced — by Meryl Streep during her Golden Globe speech that year), Pariah is sensitive and sharply observed and a must-see for anyone who’s been justly impressed by Mudbound.
