‘Phase IV’
Saul Bass is best known for creating the distinctive title/credit sequences for films like Psycho, Anatomy of a Murder, and Spartacus, but he stepped behind the camera in 1974 for the first and only time to direct Phase IV, a beautiful and chilling sci-fi film about man’s constant struggle to understand the world in which we inhabit. In this movie, two scientists are deployed to Arizona to study a rogue colony of hyper-intelligent ants that normally battle each other, but have now mysteriously decided to upend the food chain and wage war against humans. It features stunning cinematography, a riveting script, and a handful of gross-out moments that will burrow themselves into your brain forever.
