‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’
People have been looking out for each other long before the Supreme Court had any say in our lives. Take, for example, the women in Céline Sciamma’s delicate romance, Portrait of a Lady on Fire. The most poignant scene in this epic love story between two 18th-century French women doesn’t involve any kissing at all, but rather the two leads working together to come to the aid of their young servant girl, Sophie, who finds herself unexpectedly—and unwantedly—pregnant. It’s an abortion scene filmed with compassion and warmth. It’s not a moment to mourn, but to celebrate, that Sophie has people in her life to support her. Let’s hope we can all be that for each other, too.
