‘Preacher’

This might be a little too inside baseball, but when we’re putting together these “what to watch” posts, we need to choose a genre for the show, or movie. It honestly took me five minutes to decide on “Action/Adventure” for AMC’s bizarro comic book based show Preacher, and it still feels wrong. The series follows lapsed preacher Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) as he grapples with having an angelic power that allows him to control people’s minds — and his search cross-country to find God, who has left heaven. Along the way, he teams up with his on-again, off-again girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Negga), a vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) and various other insane creatures from heaven, hell, and beyond (including, I kid you not, a sympathetic Hitler). It’s incredibly violent, incredibly hilarious, and incredibly heartfelt; often in the same scene. And it’s not an Action/Adventure, but I had to choose something. Sorry.
