‘Scare Me’
“Do you like scary movies?” That phrase famously kicked off the action in Scream, but Scare Me—a new movie exclusive to the Shudder streaming service—takes that premise and gives it a bit of an evolutionary twist: “Do you like scary stories?” In this inventive yet fairly bare bones movie about writer’s block, professional envy, and toxic masculinity, struggling screenwriter Fred (Josh Ruben, who also serves as the writer and director) rents a remote cabin (IN THE WOODS!) in an attempt to jumpstart a new project. He quite literally runs into Fanny (Aya Cash), a successful horror writer, and the two decide to kill the time during a power outage by competing to see who can tell the better scary story. Why Netflix and Chill this Halloween season when you can Shudder and Smooch instead?
