‘Star Trek III: The Search for Spock’
While not as action focused as its predecessor (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) or the goofy fun of the next sequel (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home), Star Trek III is an essential middle chapter in what is the definitive Star Trek film trilogy. After the shocking climax of Wrath of Khan left Spock dead, it turns out his spirit is actually inhabiting the body of the Leonard “Bones” McCoy (DeForest Kelley). And though he’s a doctor, not a spirit vessel, dammit, he still manages to play a key role in getting Spock’s body back in shape. The rest of the plot is more murky and metaphysical, and Christopher Lloyd playing a Klingon as the villain is an… Interesting choice. But this is the original Trek crew working together in prime shape, and it’s a joy to see. Plus, if you skip ahead to Voyage Home you’ll be super confused as to why Spock is alive again. So, you know: check it out.
