‘Superstar’
Molly Shannon is an American treasure, and we don’t give her enough credit. Take, for example, the highly underrated 1999 Saturday Night Live spinoff Superstar. Starring Shannon as Mary Katherine Gallagher and Will Ferrell as her romantic interest before he took off, the misunderstood comedy plays much better when you understand it was directed by Kids in the Hall star Bruce McCulloch. That’s because the weirdo rhythms of the jokes and extended, cringey sequences like Shannon repeatedly telling her parents she hates them and slamming a door for a solid minute are far closer to KITH bits than SNL sketches (even though there was plenty of crossover between the two). If it had come out now… Well, Superstar might have still been a flop. But it would have become more of a cult fave on par with MacGruber than the forgotten comedy it has become.
