‘The Alienist’

I have this issue where I keep calling The Alienist “old-timey Mindhunter.” That description is not meant as a ding against the TNT limited series, but a compliment. Daniel Bruhl stars as the titular alienist, Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a man possessed by the need to catch a brutal serial killer in Gilded Age New York City. Kreizler puts together a team of veritable outcasts to catch a sadistic murderer targeting “boy prostitutes.” The show hits similar chords as Mindhunter and Hannibal, but with a Victorian era twist. Indeed, the real draw of the series is its immersive take on old New York.
