‘The Dropout’
We’re two months into 2022 and there’s already a strong trend in this year’s prestige TV: the based-on-true-events limited series. Hulu’s Pam and Tommy, Netflix’s Inventing Anna, Peacock’s Joe vs. Carole — and now there’s The Dropout (also on Hulu). But unlike all the aforementioned shows, The Dropout is the one that doesn’t feel like cheeky fun; The Dropout feels truly prestigious and vitally now. Amanda Seyfried gives the performance of her career as Elizabeth Holmes, the maverick who dropped out of college and upended the tech world by inventing a revolutionary medical device… except… uh, she didn’t invent it and it also didn’t really work. The Dropout dives into the deep end of the drama surrounding Holmes’ life, dissecting the venture capital world and showing the cutthroat side of Silicon Valley. It even turns Holmes’ decision to change her voice from a weird-but-true factoid into a major character moment. It turns out there’s plenty more to this story than what we already know.
