‘The Gentlemen’
Guy Ritchie’s 2019 movie The Gentlemen was a rollicking good time, fueled by spliffs and the star power of Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell, Jeremy Strong, and Charlie Hunnam. A sequel never came to fruition despite Ritchie’s best efforts, but in its place we have something better: A spin-off series on Netflix! None of the aforementioned leads return for The Gentlemen (the series), but Guy Ritchie did pull off a minor casting coup by framing the series around Theo James, fresh off his White Lotus success and pumped full of bravado. James stars as Edward Horniman, a British army veteran and all-around cool customer who is unexpectedly earns the title of Duke — and also inherits a palatial estate in the countryside — when his father dies. Unbeknownst to Edward, the estate also doubles as a major cog in an international marijuana operation, and, well, hijinks ensue. Ritchie has not lost a step when it comes to putting his patented spin on the nefarious underworld of British organized crime, and his kinetic style of filmmaking makes this one of the most enjoyable and stylish Netflix Original series in quite some time.
