‘The Grateful Dead Movie’
Jerry Garcia, who would have turned 76 this week, held a lifelong passion for film and images, and so The Grateful Dead Movie, which Garcia directed, was a special project for the Dead’s unofficial leader. The film, released in 1977, documents the Grateful Dead’s October 1974 ‘farewell’ shows which preceded a nearly two year hiatus from touring. Intercut with emotive live footage is a wild, ten minute opening animation sequence propelled by psychedelic imagery, created by future “Touch Of Grey” video director Gary Gutierrez.
