‘The Greatest Showman’
Look, I’m not going to sit here and tell you The Greatest Showman‘s reputation as a cheeseball spectacular with an extremely sketchy knowledge of history and the impact P.T. Barnum left on the world isn’t well deserved. This is a fantasy musical about the dawn of the circus that has almost no relationship to reality. But once you get past that, you can see how perfectly the Hugh Jackman vehicle channels what makes the circus so spectacular. The songs are catchy, the direction is expert — feeling more like a musical from the dawn of cinema filmed on a sound stage (with CGI touches, mind you) than a modern movie musical. And its sole goal is to entertain, to make you feel something, and then let you get on with your day… Greatest Showman is all wow and cotton candy fluff with no real substance. But sometimes, that’s okay. Grab the whole family and prepare to be dazzled.
