‘The Green Knight’
The Green Knight might be the first movie to truly capture the sensation of getting lost in medieval literature. Written and directed by David Lowery, this bold cinematic take on the myths of Arthurian legend casts Dev Patel as a reluctant hero. When we meet young Gawain, his is nothing more than King Arthur’s ne’er-do-well nephew, without a single heroic tale to his name. That all changes when the Christmas feast is interrupted by Ralph Ineson’s Green Knight, an imposing and mystical creature whose very presence evokes the horrors of nature. Gawain strikes the Green Knight down without realizing he’s promised to let the supernatural warrior do the same to him in one year’s time. Thus sparks a stranger, beguiling, messy, and trippy adventure worthy of eternal fame, though not glory.
