‘The Lost Daughter’
Throughout the entirety of The Lost Daughter, you’re just waiting for something terrible to happen. The title hangs ominously over the story, which centers on a professor (Olivia Colman) on vacation in Greece who becomes fascinated by a young mother staying nearby. At times, it feels as terrifying as a horror movie, despite the fact that nothing very terrible is happening. When the reveal finally comes, it may not be what you were expecting. By then, though, you’ll be lost in Colman’s equal parts heartbreaking and hilarious performance and the confident, singular style from first-time director Maggie Gyllenhaal. The Lost Daughter is a haunting, unconventional portrait of motherhood that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
