‘The Patient’
A serial killer locks a therapist in his basement in the FX limited series The Patient, but the gripping thriller — which has plenty of pitch-black comedy peppered throughout — is much more than its simple premise suggests. Steve Carell stars as Alan, a psychologist who finds himself held captive by his patient, Gene, (Domhnall Gleeson) who later reveals himself to be Sam, a.k.a. “the John Doe Killer.” Sam has trapped Alan in his home with the hopes that he can finally be cured of his compulsion to kill, but their therapy sessions are thwarted by the clear power dynamic between captor and prisoner. The sharp series is a must-watch for your fall TV calendar, and with each episode clocking in at 20 minutes, you’ll be left wishing there was much more.
