‘The Prom’

Don’t listen to the haters, because Netflix’s new musical The Prom is a guaranteed good time. Directed by Ryan Murphy, and adapted from composer Matthew Sklar’s Tony-nominated 2018 musical of the same name, it’s a tongue-in-cheek tale of a group of elitist Broadway stars (Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, and Andrew Rannells) who travel to a small town in Indiana ostensibly to help a high school lesbian (Jo Ellen Pellman) who’s been banned from prom, but more importantly, to drum up good publicity for themselves. Of course, through the power of song, dance, and one very special high school student, they learn to care about someone other than themselves, for once. Do I wish Murphy had thrown the original Broadway cast a bone? Absolutely. Still, the music is great, the dancing is great, and despite Corden being miscast, you’ll have a blast with The Prom.
